Just over two years ago the former Horizon Trailer Park was purchased by GGC Management and reformed into Klondike Gateway Mobile Home Community. We set about to improve the neighbourhood in a way that was cost effective, collaborative, transparent and of maximum benefit to our residents. Entering into year three we are happy to give an update.
From the start we aimed to be as open with our plans as possible. Starting with our resident’s input we put together a phased improvement plan to tackle the most immediate issues while ensuring we also addressed longer term maintenance and beautification. Phase one has been completed, this started with listening and building the plan itself, then the giant spring cleanup in 2018 to remove years of debris that had built up. Lastly it was our goal to lead by example and upgrade all of the homes managed by GGC to a standard of quality we expect to see within the neighbourhood. The main improvements externally were the replacement of plywood skirting with metal, repair of cracked and broken windows, and repair and/or replacement of aging or substandard decks/ porches.
Phase two were larger items that required greater investment and coordination. First priority was to repair the neighbourhood streetlights. The old low pressure sodium light fixtures had broken, and were in need of replacement. Comments from residents were clear: the darkness left them feeling less safe. Safety and feeling comfortable where you live is paramount to us and, with the help of Talon Electric, we had them replaced immediately. The last phase two item was also underway however we have had to regretfully put it on hold as none of the trees planted along 49th Avenue thrived with the trees planted to the west faring particularly poorly. After discussions with the town and seeing the difficulty the town trees were having along Highway Street, we will be watching, monitoring and seeking trees that are suitable for our soil, temperature and wind conditions.
With 2020 underway management is now actively working on Phase Three.
